Light and Dark sought help from the first children of Father and Mother in their role as protectors of Shadow. They agreed and all took turns to stand guard over Shadow so that she was never alone. Spring and Summer stood with Light, Autumn (who had now returned) and Winter stood with Dark. Seeking to put behind her all that had happened, Shadow took comfort from the protection until eventually her eyes grew back, at which point she wept a great deluge upon the world. Now that Shadow could see fully again she called Luck and Fate to her. When she saw Luck she brought him and Chaos together so that Chaos subsequently gave birth to Peddler, Mendicant, Thief and Weaver. Weaver grew up to marry Farmer and they had children Artist, Warrior, Bard and Dreamer. Mendicant married Thinker, having Teacher, Sailor and Hunter.

Seeing that Shadow was recovered, ever watchful of them and surrounded by her protectors, Life and Death worked long to create their own coterie. Yersina, Drymen, Bungaro, Myrmeca were fashioned by Death; Botan, Protea and Xoolyte by Life. Yersina and Protea conceived Sophist, the god of lies and deceit.

Later, when Life and Death plotted with their coterie against Shadow once more, Botan and Xoolyte, wanting no part in the planned attack, fled to a distant place. There they created countless new animals and plants, over which they now held dominion. They took great joy in adapting their works to live in the extremes of climate and geography that the many lands of the mortal plane offered and in making them beautiful to behold. The plotters gave up for a time on their plan to bring down Shadow, fearing that Botan and Xoolyte would betray their plans.
